About Benefit Guide US
Benefit Guide US publishes plain-English guides to U.S. government and established nonprofit assistance programs — food assistance, housing and rent help, utility bill relief, education grants, and healthcare coverage. Every guide answers three questions: who qualifies, what you get, and how to apply. Every guide is also published in Spanish.
How we research every guide
We do not summarize other websites' summaries. Each guide is built the same way, every time:
- Primary sources only. Eligibility rules, dollar amounts, and deadlines are read directly from official sources — federal regulations (eCFR), agency pages (.gov), state program manuals, or a nonprofit's own official site — on the day the guide is written. If we cannot verify a number in a primary source, we do not print it.
- The regulation beats the brochure. Where a plain-language government page and the underlying regulation disagree — it happens more often than you would expect — we cite the regulation and explain the difference. Several of our guides exist specifically because the most widely circulated number for a program is the wrong one.
- Year and state are always named. Benefit amounts change every year and vary by state, so each guide states exactly which year's figures it uses and where limits vary locally.
- Official application links only. We link to the official application site for each program. We never link to middlemen or paid "application assistance" services, and we flag the common scams around each program, because free programs attract paid impostors.
- Ongoing re-verification. Published guides are re-checked against their sources on a rotating schedule. When a source changes, the guide is corrected and its "Last updated" date reflects that revision.
Corrections
If a reader or a source update shows something in a guide is wrong or has gone stale, we correct the guide itself rather than leaving the error in place, and the "Last updated" date on the page is the date of that revision. Spotted a mistake? Tell us through the contact page — corrections are the most useful mail we get.
How this site is funded
Benefit Guide US is supported by advertising. Ads never influence which programs we cover, what the guides say, or where application links point. We do not accept payment from any program, agency, or service to be featured, and we do not process applications or charge readers anything.
Independence
We are an independent informational website. We are not affiliated with any government agency or nonprofit we write about. Our guides are general information, not legal or financial advice — final eligibility decisions always belong to the agency that runs each program, so verify details on the official site before you rely on them.
